Sancaklar Mosque
Located in Büyükçekmece, Istanbul, Sancaklar Camii stands out as an important structure that approaches mosque design beyond conventional architectural patterns. The project aims to move away from the formal and stylistic pursuits often seen in mosque architecture and instead focuses on the essence of a place of worship and the spiritual experience it offers to its users. This approach transforms the building from a mere architectural object into a spatial experience that supports the spiritual atmosphere of prayer.
The mosque is situated in a rural area separated from surrounding dense residential developments and highway infrastructure. This context plays a crucial role in shaping the main design decisions. By utilizing the natural slope of the land, the project adopts a topographic approach that allows the structure to merge with the terrain, almost becoming a part of the earth itself. The courtyard and park arranged at the upper level of the mosque create a transitional space where visitors can distance themselves from the intensity of daily life before entering the prayer hall. The walls surrounding this courtyard form a clear boundary between the chaotic outside world and the calm atmosphere of the mosque.
The path leading from the upper courtyard to the prayer hall gradually guides visitors toward the main structure located at a lower level. This movement is designed not only as a physical transition but also as a spiritual preparation. The main prayer hall offers a simple yet powerful atmosphere, intentionally isolated from the distractions of the outside world. Its architectural language is modest, restrained, and profound, allowing visitors to focus on the meaning of worship rather than the architectural form itself.
The slit that extends along the qibla wall is one of the most striking features of the space. It reinforces the orientation of the prayer area while allowing natural light to enter the interior in a dramatic way throughout the day. As sunlight changes during different hours, it creates varying tones and shadows on the wall surface, giving the space a constantly evolving atmosphere.
By exploring the tension and relationship between natural topography and human-made architecture, Sancaklar Mosque has become an important reference point in contemporary discussions on mosque architecture. The building demonstrates that architecture can be more than a formal expression; it can also be a powerful medium that shapes and enhances the spiritual experience of its users. The design of Sancaklar Mosque aims to address the fundamental challenges of mosque architecture by moving away from form-based contemporary debates and focusing solely on the essence of a sacred space.
